Nigeria crash out of 2018 World Cup

Marcus Rojo’s stunning finish four minutes from time kept Lionel Messi and Argentina’s World Cup hopes alive to see off Nigeria 2-1 on Tuesday and set up a last 16 meeting with France. Messi’s first goal of the tournament got the two-time winners off to a perfect start in Saint Petersburg, but Victor Moses’s 51st minute penalty had Jorge Sampaoli’s men headed for a humiliating group stage exit until Rojo’s late intervention. The Manchester United defender, who had escaped conceding a second Nigerian penalty moments earlier after a controversial VAR review, thundered home Gabriel Mercado’s cross to send the under-fire Sampaoli running down the sidelines amid wild scenes of celebration. Messi missed a penalty in a 1-1 draw with Iceland and was largely bypassed in a 3-0 thrashing by Croatia that saw calls for Sampaoli to be sacked before their final group game. However, Argentina avoided the abyss by the skin of their teeth to fight another day against the highly-fan

Catholic priest suspended for rapping in church

Image
A catholic priest in Kenya has been suspended for misconduct after rapping in church. Fr Paul Ogalo had been using rap music to attract youths to Church and spread messages against drugs and in favour of social justice issues. After Mass, Fr Ogalo would change from his vestments into a white shirt, black shorts, and a red bandana, begin to rap for the congregation, who danced along to the music.  “We need to take care of the interests of youths in our churches,” he said. “We need to change the way we do things.”  Church youth leader Violet Menya said not only do many young people come to church because of the rap music, they keep coming back.  “We are happy that his style of preaching is attracting many youths to church. He has mentored very many youths to leave … drug abuse and embrace farming, business and other activities,” Menya said. Benard Oketch, a 28-year-old member of the congregation said he will stop attending church because of the priest’s suspension.  “Fr Paul

RONALDO SETS ANOTHER NEW RECORD WITH EARLY PENALTY

Image
The Real Madrid star has now scored in no less than four World Cups and eight major international competitions with Portugal The records just keep tumbling for Cristiano Ronaldo as he set a new international landmark just minutes into his World Cup campaign on Friday.  Ronaldo has become accustomed to seeing the records fly over the last decade due to his remarkable goalscoring ability at Real Madrid.  But he is also no slouch at international level. After just two minutes the forward won a penalty off club team-mate Nacho and made no mistake in executing the spot-kick himself, sending David de Gea the wrong way.  The goal was the fastest in a World Cup game since 1966, when Jose Augusto scored after 1:35 against Hungary and also sealed an incredible record of consistency over Ronaldo's career.  Ronaldo has now scored in eight consecutive major international tournaments - including World Cups, European Championships and Copas America - a feat no European or South A

Russia stops Nigerian fans from bringing live chicken to stadium

Image
Russia has denied Nigeria’s football fans the opportunity to bring live chickens into the stadium when the Super Eagles are playing. As reported by Russia’s  Interfax.ru,  Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Kaliningrad region, Andrei Ermak told reporters. “Our information center MCH-2018 receives a lot of various questions: fans from Nigeria asked if it’s possible to go to the stadium with a chicken, it’s their symbol, the citizens are sick with them at all matches, we told them that to pass a live chicken, in any case, it is impossible “, – said Ermak. At the same time, he noted that if the Nigerians are rooting for their team in other places, “we will, of course, advise them where the chicken can be bought.” We are ready to satisfy the most eccentric inquiries,” the regional minister added. The supporters club of the Super Eagles have been known to go into stadiums with a live chicken, which is one of the ways they cheer on the team to victory.

Finally Mimiko resigns from PDP

A former governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has sent his letter of resignation to the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state as he has concluded arrangement to go back to his former party,  the Labour Party. It was gathered that the former governor, who joined the PDP in 2014 and later became the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, dumped the party following a disagreement between him and some national leaders of the party shortly after he left office as the governor in 2017. In a letter addressed to the state leadership of the PDP on Wednesday, Mimiko said his decision to leave the party was personal to him. The letter read in part, ” I hereby with utmost humility inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the PDP with effect from today, June 13, 2018, for some well-thought-out personal reasons. ” It was an honour working with the many prominent Nigerians with whom I shared the PDP platform for the entire period I was in there as a m

Stop showing loyalty to Abacha, Soyinka tells President Buhari

Image
Twenty-five years after the military dictator, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retd.), annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the late Chief Moshood Abiola, President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday formally apologised to the family of the deceased who died in custody while struggling to reclaim his mandate. In turn, the family of the deceased politician also apologised to the President for the wrongs Abiola did to him while he was still alive. This played out at the Presidential Villa, Abuja where Buhari posthumously conferred the highest national honour of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic on Abiola. Also, Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka told Buhari to stop showing loyalty to “Abiola’s tormentor.”

North Korea’s Kim Jong Un brought own toilet to summit with Trump

Image
North Korea’s Kim Jong Un brought with him his own portable toilet to Singapore for the Tuesday’s summit with U.S. president Donald Trump. South Korean news agency The Chosunilbo reported that when Kim arrived in Singapore on an Air China Boeing 747 and  was accompanied by an IL-76 transport plane carrying food, “his bullet-proof limousine and a portable toilet.” Accordingly to Lee Yun-keol, who worked in a North Korean Guard Command unit before defecting to South Korea in 2005, that’s par for the course. “Rather than using a public restroom, the leader of North Korea has a personal toilet that follows him around when he travels,” Lee Yun-keol told the Washington Post. The reason? They are protecting against a literal info dump. “The leader’s excretions contain information about his health status so they can’t be left behind,” Lee Yun-keol explained. Similar travel considerations are reportedly made whenever the North Korean leader conducts on-site inspections of milit

Ex-Nigerian governor convicted of fraud

Image
Few weeks after a former Taraba governor, Jolly Nyame, was jailed 14 years for fraud, the Federal Capital Territory High Court has found former Plateau State governor, Joshua Dariye, guilty of fraud.  Mr Dariye was charged for allegedly diverting N1. 161.9 billion while he served as governor of the North-central state. He was brought to court on a 23-count charge for the alleged offence by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC in 2007.  Although Mr Dariye’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi, questioned the authenticity of evidence adduced in court against his client, the court said the evidences clearly indicate a case of diversion. The judge, Adebukola Banjoko, found him guilty of diverting funds to the Peoples Democratic Party in the state among other groups.  Mrs Banjoko who was still reading the judgement at the time of this report found Mr Dariye guilty of counts 1, 2, 4, and 7. The counts relate to the diversion of N80 million to the PDP, N100 million to a company, Mari

June 12: president Buhari finally honour Abiola,Kingibe and Gani

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari will Tuesday morning, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, confer Nigeria’s highest honour to the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 election, late Moshood Abiola.  While Mr Abiola will be given a posthumous award of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), his then running mate, Babagana Kingibe, will be awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).  Also, late human rights activist and senior lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi, will be awarded the GCON. PDP, Oshiomhole disagree over PMB’s gesture of June 12

Image
The opposition Peoples Democratic Party and former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole,  have disagreed over the motive behind President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to declare June 12 Democracy Day and honour the late Chief MKO Abiola. While PDP insists  that Buhari is seeking to use the gesture to claim democratic credentials, Oshiomhole said the President’s gesture is altruistic and shows his strength of character. The two spoke at different instances in Abuja, on Sunday. In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP said President Buhari’s gesture of bestowing a posthumous national award on the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election and democratic icon, Chief MKO Abiola, had not made him a democrat. The PDP said it fully supported any honour done by the nation to the memory of the late Abiola and all that he stood for. It, however, rejected the inclination by President Buhari to use the occasion to postu

I’m running for president 2019 – Donald Duke

Image
Another high-profile candidate has announced he wants to stand in next year’s presidential election in Nigeria but held off declaring which party he would represent. Donald Duke, a former governor of Cross Rivers, told AFP: “I’m running. I am sure many, many will join.” Duke is a respected politician who was in charge of Cross Rivers for eight years until 2007 and is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). But he has been linked to a movement backed by former president Olusegun Obasanjo, who has fiercely criticised Nigeria’s incumbent Muhammadu Buhari. Obasanjo said in January that Buhari, whose fitness to govern has been questioned after he spent months in London last year being treated for an undisclosed illness, needed a “deserved rest”. Buhari, who like Obasanjo previously headed a military government, had shown a poor grasp of the economy, foreign policy and Nigeria’s complex internal politics, he added. Another former military ruler, Ibrahim Baban
