North Korea’s Kim Jong Un brought own toilet to summit with Trump

Image
North Korea’s Kim Jong Un brought with him his own portable toilet to Singapore for the Tuesday’s summit with U.S. president Donald Trump. South Korean news agency The Chosunilbo reported that when Kim arrived in Singapore on an Air China Boeing 747 and  was accompanied by an IL-76 transport plane carrying food, “his bullet-proof limousine and a portable toilet.” Accordingly to Lee Yun-keol, who worked in a North Korean Guard Command unit before defecting to South Korea in 2005, that’s par for the course. “Rather than using a public restroom, the leader of North Korea has a personal toilet that follows him around when he travels,” Lee Yun-keol told the Washington Post. The reason? They are protecting against a literal info dump. “The leader’s excretions contain information about his health status so they can’t be left behind,” Lee Yun-keol explained. Similar travel considerations are reportedly made whenever the North Korean leader conducts on-s...

Ex-Nigerian governor convicted of fraud

Image
Few weeks after a former Taraba governor, Jolly Nyame, was jailed 14 years for fraud, the Federal Capital Territory High Court has found former Plateau State governor, Joshua Dariye, guilty of fraud.  Mr Dariye was charged for allegedly diverting N1. 161.9 billion while he served as governor of the North-central state. He was brought to court on a 23-count charge for the alleged offence by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC in 2007.  Although Mr Dariye’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi, questioned the authenticity of evidence adduced in court against his client, the court said the evidences clearly indicate a case of diversion. The judge, Adebukola Banjoko, found him guilty of diverting funds to the Peoples Democratic Party in the state among other groups.  Mrs Banjoko who was still reading the judgement at the time of this report found Mr Dariye guilty of counts 1, 2, 4, and 7. The counts relate to the diversion of N80 million to the PDP, N100 million to a...

June 12: president Buhari finally honour Abiola,Kingibe and Gani

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari will Tuesday morning, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, confer Nigeria’s highest honour to the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 election, late Moshood Abiola.  While Mr Abiola will be given a posthumous award of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), his then running mate, Babagana Kingibe, will be awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).  Also, late human rights activist and senior lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi, will be awarded the GCON. Mr Buhari had last week announced that henceforth, Democracy Day in Nigeria will be celebrated on June 12 and not May 29 each year.  Already, several individuals and groups who played prominent roles pushing for the actualisation of June 12 and its proclamation as Nigeria’s Democracy Day have been invited to witness the event, which will hold inside the conference centre of State House Villa, Abuja. PDP, Oshiomhole disagree over PMB’s gesture of June 12

Image
The opposition Peoples Democratic Party and former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole,  have disagreed over the motive behind President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to declare June 12 Democracy Day and honour the late Chief MKO Abiola. While PDP insists  that Buhari is seeking to use the gesture to claim democratic credentials, Oshiomhole said the President’s gesture is altruistic and shows his strength of character. The two spoke at different instances in Abuja, on Sunday. In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP said President Buhari’s gesture of bestowing a posthumous national award on the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election and democratic icon, Chief MKO Abiola, had not made him a democrat. The PDP said it fully supported any honour done by the nation to the memory of the late Abiola and all that he stood for. It, however, rejected the inclination by President Buhari to use the occasion...

I’m running for president 2019 – Donald Duke

Image
Another high-profile candidate has announced he wants to stand in next year’s presidential election in Nigeria but held off declaring which party he would represent. Donald Duke, a former governor of Cross Rivers, told AFP: “I’m running. I am sure many, many will join.” Duke is a respected politician who was in charge of Cross Rivers for eight years until 2007 and is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). But he has been linked to a movement backed by former president Olusegun Obasanjo, who has fiercely criticised Nigeria’s incumbent Muhammadu Buhari. Obasanjo said in January that Buhari, whose fitness to govern has been questioned after he spent months in London last year being treated for an undisclosed illness, needed a “deserved rest”. Buhari, who like Obasanjo previously headed a military government, had shown a poor grasp of the economy, foreign policy and Nigeria’s complex internal politics, he added. Another former military ruler, Ibrahim Baban...
