splinter group returns back to PDP

ABUJA-A splinter group of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the ‘Fresh PDP’ has agreed to give peace a chance by returning into the fold of the mainstream PDP.

Announcing this decision after a meeting with a former national chairman of the party, ‎Okwesilieze Nwodo, yesterday in Abuja, chairman of the ‘Fresh PDP’ Olukayode Akindele, said the party is bigger than any individual or group, stating that it was time for a ceasefire.

The group came into being in protest of the conduct and outcome of the party’s national elective convention on December 9, 2017 which produced the current National Working Committee (NWC) led by the national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus.
In a chat with journalists few minutes after the meeting, Akindele who presented a list of what the group called the ‘Authentic NWC members’ in an envelope to Nwodo, said they had resolved to bury the hatchet in the interest of Nigeria, the larger PDP family and the 2019 general elections.
“I am delighted to tell you that we have collapsed into the mainstream PDP. We have assurances from our leaders and we will not have a parallel NWC on Monday,” he said.
‎Nwodo who was barely able to contain his excitement said a truce was arrived at with the knowledge of the Board of Trustees (BoT), the National Working Committee (NWC) and other organs of the party, saying, “If the Fresh PDP was allowed to form a structure on Monday, they would have given legitimacy to our members to leave the PDP.
“We have learnt our lessons and we are coming back more prepared and resolute to change the fortunes of this country,” Nwodo stated.
On his part, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan said, “What was perceived as crisis is over.”
It would be recalled that the ‘Fresh PDP’ had in December 2017 threatened to inaugurate an “Authentic NWC” for the party, citing the manner the elective convention held to justify its position. With a secretariat in Abuja, the nation’s capital, they mounted the party’s flag and addressed press conferences to intimate the public of their plans for the party ahead of the 2019 election.
