Some senators-elect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Young Progressive Party (YPP), on Friday, declared support for Sen. Ahmad Lawan’s Senate Presidency ambition. The opposition parties’ senators-elect at the occasion included Clifford Odia (PDP-Edo), Mathew Urhoghide (PDP-Edo) and Gershom Bash (PDP-Cross River). Others were Abba Moro (PDP-Benue), Lawali Anka (PDP-Zamfara) and Ifeanyi Ubah (YPP-Anambra). NAN reports that many APC senators-elect were also at the occasion. Speaking to newsmen shortly after the event in Abuja, Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah of YPP said Lawan remains the most experience and competent senator to assume the office of the senate president. “He has the experience, he is competent and has served as majority leader in the Senate,” he said.

The Federal Government has clarified that the partial removal of dichotomy between the Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelor’s of Science (B.Sc) degree by the National Council on Establishment. Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, speaking on Thursday in Abuja, noted that the resolution of the Council was that an HND holder could now enter into public service on Grade Level 08, the same entrance level for B.Sc holder. She, however, explained that the HND graduate cannot rise above level 14 except such a person acquires an additional degree for his or her conversion to officer cadre that terminates at Grade Level 17. The Head of Service made the clarification while briefing newsmen on some of the achievements of her office under the Change Agenda 2015-2018.

Justice Okon Abang on Friday ruled that the having been declared by the Returning Officer as the winner of the February 23 senatorial election for Imo West Senatorial District (Orlu Zone), INEC has no reason not to issue him certificate of return. submission by candidates of the PDP, Jones Onyeriri and APGA, Osita Izunaso that the matter ought to be taken to the election petitions tribunal since it has become a post-election matter which robbed the court of jurisdiction under sections 285, 251(1) of the 1999 Constitution. The judge held that petitions to the election tribunal under Section 133 of the Electoral Act should be made by the losers, and not the person declared winner whether under duress or not.

A bank account containing £211m (approximately N82bn) has been traced to a former Nigerian military dictator, General Sani Abacha. The money was recovered and subsequently confiscated in Jersey, Channel Islands, on the request of the United States of America Government. Late Abacha was said to have laundered the money through the US into the Channel Islands before his death in 1998. According to a report by Metro UK on Tuesday, the money was put in accounts held in Jersey by Doraville Properties Corporation, a British Virgin Islands company.
